DETROIT – Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield has been elected to be the first woman mayor of Detroit.
Mayor-elect Sheffield has served in the city since 2013 and made history in 2022 by becoming the youngest person to be elected as council president.
The Associated Press projected her victory just after 9 p.m. on Nov. 4, just a little over an hour after the polls closed.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan released a statement following the election results: “Congratulations to Mayor-Elect Mary Sheffield. She ran an outstanding campaign and will do a great job running the City of Detroit. Our city’s progress is in very good hands and I know she and her team will make sure it not only continues, but expands.”
