Northern Lights forecast: Best time to view celestial show in Michigan today

G4 Geomagnetic Storm expected to hit midday Wednesday

The Aurora Borealis put on an impressive showing Tuesday night, and there’s potential for it to dance in the sky again Wednesday.

kP indices peaked near 9 p.m. on Nov. 11, allowing for the Northern Lights to be viewable as far south as Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Cloud cover across Metro Detroit hindered some viewing on Tuesday. However, Space Weather Prediction Center forecasters believe that Earth was and is being impacted by the first two of three anticipated CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) arrivals. That means that the final and most energetic CME has yet to arrive and may still be on track for a midday arrival today, which could lead to another viewing chance tonight.

We will possibly experience another G4 Geomagnetic Storm midday, meaning the daylight will keep us from seeing the peak of the event, but the forecast still holds on to a G3 storm after sunset tonight. Keep your eyes on the (early) night sky!
