University of Michigan engineers testing traffic system for faster commute -- Here’s how it works

System being tested at more than a dozen Oakland County intersections

Engineers at the University of Michigan are working on a new timing system that would reduce the number of times you get stopped at intersections.

They’re testing it out at more than a dozen intersections in Oakland County.

In Farmington Hills, they’re testing four signals along 8 Mile from Orchard Lake to Brentwood Street. That brought a 30% reduction in delays and a 40% reduction in stops.

Then in Royal Oak, they are testing it out on nine signals along 12 Mile from Binsetta Boulevard to North Connecticut. That brought a 20% reduction in delays and stops.

To talk about how it works, Zachary Jerome with the University of Michigan transportation research institute joined Local 4 Live. You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
