Detroit Fire Department: Gas leak inside vacant home caused explosion on city’s west side

Neighbors said they smelled gas before hearing a loud “Boom”

DETROIT – The Detroit Fire Department said a gas leak inside a vacant home has caused an explosion on the city’s west side.

The explosion occurred on Thursday (Nov. 13) in the 19400 block of Forrer Street at about 1:40 p.m.

It was empty at the time of the blast, as the home had been vacant for about two years.

Neighbors said they smelled gas before hearing a loud “Boom”.

DTE said there were no issues with their gas lines running to the home.
