DETROIT – Dozens of Detroit residents experiencing homelessness or financial hardship received winter gear and warm meals Saturday during an early morning community support event at Cass Park.
Detroit Change Makers and Mt. Olive Grand Lodge distributed more than 100 coats and 150 sleeping bags to those in need.
The event, which drew crowds before its scheduled 10 a.m. start time, also provided additional winter gear and food assistance.
“So many people are lost in their ways and people can help you, but you have to change your lifestyle,” said Ronny Deningfield, who has personally experienced homelessness and overcome addiction.
For Deningfield, the event provided something particularly meaningful — a pair of shoes that will allow him to attend church.
Keith Bates of Detroit Change Makers became emotional while discussing the community response.
“I tell people all you gotta do is get out here, just seeing the assistance and love,” Bates said. He added that any leftover supplies would be distributed throughout the city.
“There’s no rest for us, and all Detroiters were giving back and this is us giving back,” said Doyle Foster, a volunteer with the initiative.
Foster emphasized their commitment to reaching those unable to attend, stating, “For those who can’t make it out here, we’ll go to them.”
The event also featured support from local businesses, including Goodies BBQ.
Derek Johnson from Goodies BBQ highlighted the importance of “helping people less fortunate” while providing warm meals to attendees.
