Eastpointe teacher on leave following arrest related to child exploitation materials
An Eastpointe teacher has been placed on leave after he was arrested out of state, the district says.
Martin Waskowski, who has been a teacher at Pleasantview Elementary School for three years, was taken into custody Dec. 3, 2025, according to the statement.
He’s charged with possession and transportation of child exploitation materials, the district says.
88-year-old Brighton veteran receives $1.7M after massive social media fundraiser
Ed Bambas, an 88-year-old veteran and grocery store cashier from Brighton, is preparing to ring up his final can of corn after receiving an extraordinary gift.
On Friday, Dec. 5, Bambas was presented with a check for $1.7 million, the result of a fundraising campaign started by 22-year-old Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer.
Weidenhofer, who has a combined social media following of over 10 million, met Bambas about two weeks ago at a Meijer store in Brighton.
He recorded a TikTok video featuring Bambas, a retired General Motors employee, explaining why he continued to work at nearly 90 years old.
Michigan State Police help deliver holiday gifts to foster children across state
The Michigan State Police are joining one of the most meaningful events of the year -- Operation Good Cheer.
This annual Christmas gift-giving program, organized by Child and Family Charities, brings holiday cheer to children placed in foster care away from their own homes.
In 2024, Operation Good Cheer sponsored 6,730 children and delivered 20,190 gifts to 105 nonprofit agencies throughout Michigan.
Michigan ice dancers Chock and Bates make history with Grand Prix Final win
With a record seventh Grand Prix Final medal and a third consecutive gold -- Madison Chock and Evan Bates solidified their place as one of the most successful ice dance teams in history at the ISU Grand Prix.
Chock and Bates trained extensively in Novi under coach Igor Shpilband at the Novi Ice Arena, developing into world champions alongside other top teams.
While they later moved their primary training to Montreal, their Michigan roots remain central -- Bates grew up in Ann Arbor, and Chock graduated from Novi High School.
Among the most decorated American ice dance teams in history, Chock and Bates continue to be strong favorites for the February Olympic Games in Milan.
