GARDEN CITY, Mich. – A massive fire tore through a strip mall in Garden City Sunday night, with firefighters battling flames and harsh weather conditions for hours.
The fire broke out Dec. 7 at the strip mall near Middlebelt and Ford roads, forcing crews to shut down several intersections and causing traffic detours.
City officials warned residents that they may experience temporary power outages and discolored water as a result of the fire.
Firefighters from multiple local departments -- including Garden City, Dearborn Heights and Inkster -- helped battle the blaze.
The entire building was completely burned through, with massive flames visible shooting out from the structure, as captured in video footage from the scene.
Officials have not yet released information on the cause of the fire or which businesses in the strip mall were open at the time.
“It was pretty bad,” said Sandy Makowski, who lives nearby. “I mean it was shooting up, I would say at least 10, 15 feet high, smoke everywhere and they’re saying that people might lose power and damage to the water.”
The investigation is ongoing.
