Sterling Heights police commended for pulling injured woman from burning vehicle

Officers and bystanders act swiftly to prevent tragedy

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police are being commended for rescuing an elderly woman trapped in a burning vehicle in Sterling Heights.

It happened at about 6:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 8, near the intersection of 18 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue.

Officers responding to reports of a serious crash found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames with the woman trapped inside.

Officers Devon Leonard, John-Mark Branch, Kevin Archer, Andre Basin, and Sgt. Justin King, along with bystanders, quickly pulled the woman to safety and applied a tourniquet to her severely injured leg, stabilizing her until the fire department arrived.

Fire crews arrived and transported the woman to a hospital.
