Detroit Swims program breaks barriers to teach kids water safety

Free lessons aim to reduce drowning risks among kids

DETROIT – A new swim program is making waves in Michigan by providing free swim lessons and safety gear to 400 local children.

The Government Employees Health Association is partnering with the YMCA’s Detroit Swims program to break down barriers and help kids learn to swim and stay safe around water.

The initiative focuses on water safety education -- something especially important in a state with more than 11,000 lakes.

Lynette Simmons, senior vice president of community initiatives at the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, joined Local 4 Live to discuss the program and its impact on the community.
