Ex-Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore placed in mental health protective custody following arrest, dismissal

Moore will appear in court on Friday, Dec. 12

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was reportedly placed in protective custody by mental health professionals overnight following his firing and arrest on Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Authorities confirmed that Pittsfield Township Police are handling an assault case, but Moore has not been officially charged with any crime.

The Pittsfield Township Police released a statement saying the investigation is ongoing and under review by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.

“The suspect remains in custody at the Washtenaw County Jail and is expected to appear in court for arraignment on 12/12/25. The Pittsfield Township Police Department remains committed to transparency while respecting the privacy rights of both victims and the accused.”

Moore’s firing came after the university confirmed that Moore had been dismissed due to an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

Athletic director Warde Manuel said the university has a zero-tolerance policy on such incidents.

Michigan insider John U Bacon shared on social media that an employee provided irrefutable evidence of Moore’s conduct to university leaders. Bacon said, “The president and regents had seen enough, and Manuel fired him.”

Speaking to Local 4, Bacon described the situation as severe and serious. He noted that Moore was given a rare opportunity as head coach by Jim Harbaugh and athletic director Warde Manuel, but squandered it.
