There were about 10 reports made that day.
The scammers claimed to be an Ann Arbor police officer and often used an officer’s specific name.
In several cases, the scammers claimed the resident missed jury duty and needed to hand over varying amounts of money to the police department.
According to Ann Arbor Police Department Sgt. Jim Anuszkiewicz, the requested amount of money varied.
Some scammers request small amounts, some larger, and some request payment in the form of gift cards.
“I can speak for the Ann Arbor Police Department, we will never contact you and demand money from you or tell you that you’re gonna be arrested because you’re not paying money,” Anuszkiewicz said. “That’s just not something we will do.”
He said this is not the first time this has happened, and it’s especially common during the holidays.
The police department says sometimes the scammers are local, and sometimes they are in different countries.
If anyone receives a call like this, they should contact the Ann Arbor Police Department immediately.
