Man linked to 8 different shootings
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) investigated a series of shootings between Nov. 5 and Nov. 13, 2025, involving the same gun.
On Nov. 14, authorities obtained a search warrant for a felon in possession of ammunition for the suspect in those eight shootings, Davis. While agents went to arrest him, he allegedly led a police chase for about 40 minutes.

During the police chase, Davis allegedly shot at police, carjacked someone and was eventually arrested while possessing a pink SCCY model CPX-1 9 mm pistol.
Law enforcement submitted the fired cartridge cases from the pistol that Davis allegedly shot during the chase and determined that the casings were linked to the several shootings in November.
Stolen gun
The ATF learned through the Law Enforcement Information Network that the recovered gun had been reported stolen to the Detroit Police Department on Aug. 30, 2025.
According to the police report, the suspected thief, later identified as Daugherty, brought the gun’s owner to a house in Detroit. While at the house, the woman reported her gun had gone missing from her purse and suspected the person who brought her to the house was responsible.
ATF interviewed the women in December 2025. The woman described the suspect as a Black man about 5′10″ tall. She said they first met the night when the theft happened and have not interacted since. She gave police a copy of a text conversation with Daugherty, where she accused him of stealing her gun and her hotel room key. He responded by sending a picture of her hotel room key, saying, “Another b**** just found your key in my room just to let you know. . . You need to glue your s*** to your a**.”
ATF agents obtained a federal search warrant for Davis’ cell phone and found a history of phone calls between him and Daugherty.
According to police reports, ATF agents said Daugherty may have been living at the Detroit home where he met the woman he allegedly stole the gun from until late November 2025, when he and the other occupants were evicted.
An ATF agent obtained account information for his phone number, which listed the owner as John Payne and the registered address under Daugherty.
Police searched the number on Cash App and found it was associated with an account with the name John Payne in the username. The account had Daugherty as the profile picture.
An ATF agent reviewed a Facebook account vanity name John Payne, and compared the profile picture on the account with Cash App. They were able to confirm that Daugherty is pictured in the Facebook profile and Cash App.
On the Facebook account, Daugherty posted a message with a photo indicating that Davis was being released from prison soon. Authorities said this showed that Daugherty was aware that Davis had been convicted of a felony offense.
On Dec. 9, federal authorities determined that the gun recovered from the police chase had been manufactured out of the state of Michigan; therefore, it “traveled in and affected interstate commerce.”
Previous criminal history
Daugherty was sentenced to prison in 2013 on felony armed robbery and firearm charges. He was released on parole in 2020 and later violated it in April 2021.
