WIXOM, Mich. – 75-year-old Lloyd Poole remains hospitalized after a violent confrontation with a DoorDash driver in Wixom. His daughter, Jennifer Shaw, says the family is struggling as driver Ryan Turner faces a misdemeanor assault charge and is out on bond.
“We just don’t know if he’s going to wake up, so that’s the really hard part right now,” Shaw said.
Poole was reportedly trying to look out for his neighborhood when the incident occurred.
He now lies in a hospital bed, with his family uncertain about his future.
“He had to have emergency brain surgery to reduce the swelling and relieve some bleeding that was going on in his brain,” Shaw explained. “They just took off some of the bandaging on that today, but he’s responding less today than he was yesterday.”
According to police, Poole was knocked unconscious by the DoorDash driver after confronting him for speeding.
The driver, 40-year-old Ryan Turner, later turned himself in, saying he felt threatened.
The entire incident was caught on tape. Shaw said when she first saw the video, her heart dropped.
“It sounded so much harder than a punch could possibly be. I don’t know how to say it,” she said.
Turner is charged with aggravated assault, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail or a $1,000 fine, according to a judge.
This is not Turner’s first run-in with the law.
Records show a long criminal history dating back to 2003, including charges like driving without a license and a previous road rage incident in Novi.
In that Novi incident, Turner claimed he was approached aggressively and responded by shoving the other person, similar to what happened in Wixom.
“He’s already out. He’s out walking around the world like everything is fine and my dad is still laying in a hospital bed unconscious,” Shaw said.
DoorDash released a statement condemning the incident: “What occurred was absolutely appalling and unacceptable. DoorDash has zero tolerance for violence and we have permanently removed the individual’s access to the platform. We are working with local law enforcement to support their investigation to ensure justice is served.”
Poole has been in the hospital since Sunday, and it remains unknown when he will be released.
