Standoff with barricaded man with sword in Ypsilanti continues past 24 hours

Residents urged to steer clear of area

YPSILANTI, Mich. – A barricaded situation in Ypsilanti has extended into a second day.

Update: Ypsilanti barricade ends safely after more than 30 hours of negotiation

Residents are urged to avoid Cross Street, between Summit and Westmoreland streets.

According to authorities, police were called to the scene Sunday, Jan. 4, just before 12:30 p.m. on reports of a man banging on his neighbor’s doors while carrying a sword.

When police arrived, he reportedly confronted them with the sword before heading inside the home. Authorities have been negotiating since roughly 3 p.m. Sunday.

Officers have used flash bang grenades, tear gas, and a megaphone in an attempt to coax the man out. As of 3:45 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, he remains inside the home.

After hours of negotiations, officers were able to clear part of the residence, but they are continuing to work to get the man out of the home safely.

Authorities said he remains barricaded in a difficult-to-access part of the home with the sword.
