Man arrested with handgun outside Romulus Middle School, no injuries reported

Parents express concern over increasing school threats

ROMULUS, Mich. – Police arrested a 44-year-old man who attempted to enter Romulus Middle School with a handgun Tuesday morning, authorities said.

No injuries were reported as the suspect never gained entry to the building.

School security personnel immediately locked down the building and called 911 after spotting the armed man at the front doors, Romulus Police Chief Robert Pfannes said.

“The subject could not get inside,” Pfannes said. “There were later reports that there were possible shots fired or he was banging the gun on the door. That part of the investigation is still ongoing.”

Video obtained by Local 4 from a witness shows police officers arriving at the scene and ordering the suspect to put his hands up. The man complied, kneeling on the ground before officers took him into custody.

“You know we have to view the worst-case scenario... active shooter. So, it was a full-on response. The station emptied, including the officers already on the road,” Pfannes said.

Romulus Community Schools Superintendent Benjamin Edmondson praised the quick response of school staff and law enforcement.

“It could’ve been worse. Far worse,” Edmondson said. “We are not used to this but I’m prepared for it because of the society we live in. We are prepared for this kind of stuff. It’s disappointing.”

State Sen. Darrin Camilleri, D-Trenton, who was briefed by local leaders, commended the response to the incident.

“Every safety system worked today, and we avoided any potential tragedy,” Camilleri said. “I’m extremely grateful that our school staff and first responders were able to ensure that all students and staff remained safe during this frightening moment.”

Police recovered a handgun at the scene. Investigators are still working to determine the suspect’s motive and whether he has any connection to the school.

The incident prompted concerned parents to rush to the school.

“You know, it’s getting crazy, unfortunately for our kids. We didn’t grow up this way and they do,” said Bill Carroll, a parent.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the school or the community.

Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Otter at 734-942-6857. Callers may remain anonymous.
