DETROIT – A father of four went to a Detroit bar to celebrate a promotion, and now his family is outraged after he was killed and his brother was stabbed.

Family members said Jalen Stevens went to Chita’s Nefertiti’s bar on Grand River Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026. He was celebrating a recent job promotion, according to his loved ones.

Video footage shows a chaotic scene unfolding, as the crowd was pushed from inside the bar onto the sidewalk.

That’s where Stevens was shot, and his younger brother, Glen Stevens, was stabbed multiple times.

“Where was security?” their mother, Jeneen Stevens, said. “Why did nobody help them? It was two people, and all those people, you’ve seen the video. All of the people tearing my babies up, stabbing them.”

Police said they were called about a stabbing, and during that investigation, the shooting happened.

Michael Harris has been taken into custody on suspicion of first-degree murder, felony firearm, and resisting arrest.

Family members said the brothers were innocent bystanders who got caught in the middle of the brawl.

They accuse the bar of failing to provide adequate security. They also claim the bar didn’t call police until after they were notified of the stabbing.

Local 4 reached out to the business owner. We were directed to the following statement on social media:

Detroit police said the investigation is ongoing. They’re searching for the woman they believe was responsible for the initial stabbing.

“I want people to come forward,” Jeneen Stevens said. “Y’all know who those people were. Come forward.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Detroit Police Department at 313-596-2260 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
