Woman sentenced in speeding crash that killed 2 at Detroit bus stop

Driver pleads no contest to charges

DETROIT – A 34-year-old woman from Detroit will spend years in jail for a crash that killed two people who were sitting at a bus stop.

It happened just before 7 p.m. on April 25, 2025, near the intersection of Evergreen Road and Fenkell Avenue. Police said a southbound SUV was speeding when the driver lost control and drove into the northbound lanes before hitting the bus stop and slamming into a gas station.

43-year-old Kwasi Agbottah and 41-year-old Elizabeth Agbottah were killed.

At the time, Dejah Latre Berry was charged with two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of driving while license suspended causing death.

In October, Berry pleaded no contest to driving while license suspended causing death. The two reckless driving causing death charges were dismissed.

Pleading no contest has the same legal effect as a guilty plea, meaning Berry accepted the court’s punishment without admitting fault.

On Friday, Jan. 9, Berry was sentenced to 50 months to 15 years in jail, with eight days credited for time served.

Additionally, she will have to pay about $500 in fees.
