The risks to Michigan’s $348 billion auto industry, according to experts

Auto industry supports 20% of Michigan’s jobs

The Detroit Auto Show kicks off Wednesday with media and industry days, and then opens to the public on Saturday.

It’s a huge event for the auto industry, including the Detroit Big Three -- Ford, Stellantis and General Motors. But auto experts said Michigan is at a critical crossroads to project its $348 billion industry.

Competition at home and around the world is threatening the state’s leadership in auto manufacturing.

The industry supports 20% of Michigan’s jobs and pays $83 billion in wages.

At the same time, southern states are building Battery Belts to lure companies away, while China is pushing ahead in the electric vehicle race.

To talk about this, Glenn Stevems, the Executive Director of MichAuto, joined Local 4 Live. You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
