DETROIT – An additional lawsuit was filed against Sinai-Grace Hospital on Friday, saying the hospital knew more than it initially admitted in the investigation into a former nurse accused of sexually abusing patients.

Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios is accused of assaulting a patient while he was working at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit and faces four other sexual assault charges, where prosecutors claimed he “preys on vulnerable patients” who seek help at the hospital.

He’s also accused of sexually assaulting a 41-year-old woman after forcing himself into a porta-pottyin May 2025 outside Grand Circus Park in Detroit.

Following the announcement of his charges, multiple lawsuits have been filed against him and Sanai-Grace Hospital. On Jan. 16, 2026, an additional lawsuit was filed on behalf of 14 new victims who accuse Figueroa-Berrios of sexually assaulting them.

The lawsuit, filed by Gould, Grieco & Hensley PLLC, alleged the hospital was aware that one of the victims was uncomfortable with Figueroa-Berrios.

According to attorneys, nearly all of the newly alleged sexual assaults happened after the date of a documented patient incident that “should have raised immediate red flags.”

“This isn’t a minor discrepancy – this is more than a year-long gap between what Sinai-Grace is telling the public and what its own records show,” said Bryce Hensley, Gould Grieco & Hensley Founding Partner. “If staff documented concerns about this nurse in patient records, then the questions become: Why was he still treating patients? Who ignored it? Was it buried? What was done in response? Many of our clients suffered because the hospital didn’t step in when it should have and were seen after this disturbing incident.”

The new plaintiffs describe incidents mirroring earlier allegations, in which sexual assault was disguised as medical care, including groping, harassment, and coerced or unnecessary undressing.

Local 4 reached out to Sinai-Grace Hospital and received the following statement:

“Sinai-Grace Hospital prioritizes the safety of our patients. The hospital has rigorous processes in place to screen applicants prior to employment. There was no indication of a concern during that process. We also have processes to identify and address patient safety issues and take appropriate action. Upon becoming aware of allegations against Mr. Berrios, Sinai-Grace proactively initiated contact with and notified law enforcement. The hospital also immediately suspended and ultimately terminated his employment. We do not condone any type of abuse and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Federal privacy laws restrict us from sharing patient-specific information.”

Figueroa-Berrios is expected to appear in court on Jan. 30 for a motion hearing.

His trial is expected to begin on April 13.
