Teenager charged with making terroristic threats toward Ann Arbor elementary school

Police confirm no ongoing threat to students or staff

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – An 18-year-old has been charged with making terroristic threats toward an Ann Arbor elementary school.

On Friday, Jan. 16, police were alerted to serious and violent threats involving a firearm at Haisley Elementary School during 4 p.m. dismissal.

According to police, the suspect fled school grounds but was later taken into custody at his residence.

Police searched the home and found no firearms. They have confirmed the 18-year-old acted alone.

The AAPD worked with Community Mental Health to ensure the suspect received necessary support.

He is currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office authorized charges against the suspect, including one felony count of making terroristic threats and one misdemeanor count of making school threats.

The suspect will be arraigned once released from the hospital.

Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 bond and a GPS tether to keep him away from Haisley Elementary if released.

Officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat, and the school remains a safe place for learning.

Along with being in police custody, the suspect has been issued a no-trespass order barring him from all Ann Arbor Public Schools properties.

An investigation is ongoing.

“The safety of our students and staff is our priority, and we are taking this situation very seriously. We are committed to the safety and well-being of our students, staff and community. We appreciate the quick response from our school administration and staff, as well as the cooperation and support from our families.

As shared previously, the Ann Arbor Police Department (AAPD) responded immediately and took appropriate action. The individual fled the school grounds immediately after the incident and they were taken into custody at their home. There is no ongoing threat to students or staff, and the school remains a safe place for learning. AAPD continues its investigation of the incident, with the full cooperation of Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS).

In addition to the individual being taken into police custody, another immediate step was the issuance of a no-trespass order against the individual, restricting them from all AAPS property. AAPS will continue to work closely with law enforcement to take further legal action to address this situation to the fullest extent.

The AAPD and district leadership will be at Haisley when school resumes on Tuesday. District staff including school social workers and psychologists will be at Haisley to support students and staff."
