What is a 4Warn Weather Alert?

We issue a 4Warn Weather Alert when we’re expecting weather conditions that will be inconvenient to our viewers.

Why did we issue an alert for Monday, Tuesday morning?

Occasional snow showers are expected Monday, with brief but intense bursts possible in heavier snow bands and snow squalls. While snowfall totals will generally range from 1 to 2 inches, localized higher amounts are possible.

Strong west winds will add to the impacts, gusting between 35 and 45 mph at times. Blowing and drifting snow may significantly reduce visibility, particularly on open roadways, making travel hazardous.

A 4Warn Weather Alert is also in effect for snow, blowing snow and dangerously cold wind chills.

With Monday’s air temperatures in the teens, wind chill values are expected to fall below zero across much of the region. Expect wind chill values between 5 and 15 degrees below zero overnight and early Tuesday. The coldest readings are expected in the Thumb, where wind chills could approach -20 degrees.

Drivers are urged to use caution, slow down and allow extra time to reach destinations. Officials recommend avoiding sudden braking in poor visibility and remaining alert for rapidly changing conditions during possible snow squalls. If travel is not necessary, residents are encouraged to stay off the roads.

Cold safety is also a major concern. It is recommended to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers and cover exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite and hypothermia. Hats, gloves, scarves and insulated outerwear are essential, especially during early morning and nighttime hours. Pet owners should also bring animals indoors during the coldest periods.
