ANN ARBOR, Mich. – An Ann Arbor woman says she lost hundreds of dollars when the money on a Visa gift card she bought from Kroger was sent to Draft Kings in Boston.

“I just went over to the little rack where you get the cards and I grabbed one and I remember hearing stories of, ‘Don’t ever take the first or second one, so I dug to the back,” Christine Anderson of Ann Arbor said.

She knew the risk with cards like this, but took all the right steps.

“I flipped the packaging over to make sure it didn’t look compromised in any kind of way and it looked secure,” she said.

She checked out. While she was still in the store, she checked the online Visa site to make sure the funds were there.

For a second, they were.

“As I hit refresh the second or third time, all the funds were gone and it said the money was transferred to Draft Kings in Boston,” she said.

She immediately called Visa and they confirmed the money was gone. She told the manager at the Kroger.

“He flipped them over and he goes ‘There’s nothing wrong with these cards.’ I looked at him and I said ‘What do you mean there’s nothing wrong with these cards.’ He goes ‘The thieves, if they are going to steal these, you see they scratch these numbers off and these cards all look fine,’” she said.

She was feeling frustrated and went back the next morning. She didn’t want it to happen to anyone else.

“I walked back over to the kiosk and that section was empty then,” she said.

Local 4 reached out to Visa on Saturday and has not heard back. Local 4 also reached out to Kroger on Sunday, but has not heard back.
