Driver crashes car into Delta Airlines check-in area at Detroit Metro Airport

The driver was detained

ROMULUS, Mich. – A driver crashed their vehicle into the Delta Airlines baggage check-in area inside Detroit Metro Airport.

The crash that sent travelers running for cover after the car smashed through the front glass doors into the Delta check-in counter occurred on Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, in Romulus.

It appeared the driver, in a Mercedes S-Class, was detained by security, but as of 8:30 p.m., there was no official word on the cause of the crash.

“Our team is gathering information, and we hope to have an update shortly,” said Detroit Metro Airport.

DTW said there were no reported customer injuries, and three employees who encountered debris were checked by EMT.

“The Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) Police Department is currently investigating a vehicle that drove into the entrance of the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) hitting a ticket counter.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 this evening. The driver is in custody and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time.

The WCAA Fire Department treated six people at the scene.
