Car crashes through DTW’s McNamara Terminal, raising security concerns

6 treated for injuries at scene, but no one was seriously hurt

ROMULUS, Mich. – A security breach at Detroit Metropolitan Airport has sparked safety concerns after a car smashed through the entrance of McNamara Terminal on Friday evening.

The vehicle took out a metal security bollard before traveling through the terminal and smashing into the Delta ticket counter—just steps away from a TSA security checkpoint.

“I don’t even know how this all happened. It’s crazy,” said Cameron Wolske, a traveler who witnessed the breach. “I mean, he would have to turn and then go straight through. So, it’s like how that even played out just shocks me.”

The security failure has prompted immediate action from airport authorities. Workers have temporarily replaced the destroyed bollard with a cement block and boarded up the entrance.

Local 4 reached out to the Wayne County Airport Authority to see what’s being done to prevent an incident like this from happening again.

“As a result of this incident, WCAA is reviewing our security and safety measures and will make any improvements or adjustments as necessary,” a spokesperson for the Wayne County Airport Authority said in a statement. “Additionally, WCAA continuously reviews safety and security measures for improvement in general.”

Six people were treated for injuries at the scene, but no one was seriously hurt.

The driver, who was quickly taken into custody, is believed to have been experiencing a mental health crisis.

So far, no charges have been filed.
