Local author opens book-and-wine lounge, bringing new energy to Detroit’s Corktown

DETROIT – A local author’s vision of combining books and wine has brought new energy to Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood.

Tamela Todd, owner of Sip N Read, has transformed her passion for reading and wine into a thriving community space that’s quickly becoming a neighborhood hub.

“For me as a woman, I see my vision has come to fruition,” Todd said. “I am happy about where I am and want to see women in general be more passionate about what you want to do.”

The Motor City Match award winner drew inspiration from her global travels, where she witnessed firsthand how wine, books, and community spaces could unite people.

That experience now shapes her Detroit venture, where book clubs, women’s groups, and corporate meetings regularly convene.

Todd’s choice of location wasn’t coincidental.

“I always say you are popping a cork, so Corktown!” Todd said, noting how the establishment fits naturally into the neighborhood’s rich history of restaurants and bars.

As both an entrepreneur and author, Todd has created something unique in Detroit’s literary and social scene, encouraging connection among neighbors and friends while serving as an inspiration for aspiring business owners.

The space also offers an extensive mocktail menu for those seeking the ambiance without alcohol.

Todd continues to balance her roles as business owner and writer, with her next book scheduled for release in 2026.

Sip N Read is also hosting a Galentine’s Day Brunch event on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2026.
