A landmark trial is getting started this week in Los Angeles. It will determine whether social media companies are responsible for harming children.
Jury selection began on Tuesday for the first of hundreds of lawsuits against Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and Snap.
The lawsuit accused the tech companies of knowingly designing addictive products that are harmful to users’ mental health.
In this case, both TikTok and Snap reached a settlement with the plaintiff, but the case is proceeding against Meta and Google.
And all four companies are still defendants in a series of similar lawsuits expected to go to trial this year.
Jennifer Dukarski, a Butzel Long attorney who specializes in media and tech law, joined Local 4 Live to talk about the significance of this trial and the legal arguments we’re expecting. You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
