At the same time, Nuka has moved on to the Toledo Zoo, where he will be reunited with female polar bear Crystal.
While his departure is bittersweet, zoo officials are thrilled to see Nuka continue to thrive and contribute to the future of polar bears in a new setting.
Kali is already settling comfortably into his new home and quickly winning over his care team. He’s described as outgoing, curious, and exceptionally intelligent. The zoo said he enjoys watching guests, exploring every corner of his habitat and taking on enrichment challenges that test both his strength and problem-solving skills.
Kali will be gradually introduced to female polar bears Suka and Haley, following a thoughtful process led by the zoo’s expert animal care team, according to the zoo.
This swap marks an important step in ongoing efforts to support the polar bear population.
In 2013, Kali was rescued as an orphaned cub in Alaska.
He joins two female polar bears at the Detroit Zoo: Suka, born in 2012, and Haley, born in 2002.
