NAACP Detroit branch calls on Congress to halt funding for ICE amid nationwide raids
A panel of leaders from diverse backgrounds gathered in Detroit to speak out against recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids happening across the country.
They compared conditions in the U.S. with those in developing countries, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
Nabih Ayad, founder of the Arab American Civil Rights League, said, “We have to stand together. We have to stand against tyranny. This is not the America we came to.”
The NAACP Detroit branch is taking a firm stance against ICE’s actions nationwide, calling attention to what they describe as untrained and unqualified agents.
Tom Izzo expresses disappointment after Michigan State falls to Michigan basketball on his birthday
Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo expressed deep disappointment following his team’s 83-71 loss to the No. 3-ranked Michigan Wolverines inside the Breslin Center on his 71st birthday.
“Well, to say I’m disappointed would be an understatement. I did not like the way we played,” Izzo said.
Izzo credited Michigan for playing well but pointed to his team’s struggles with turnovers, especially among the big men.
“We’re starting to have too many turnovers by our bigs,” Izzo noted.
Detroit sees yet another water main break as cold weather strains aging pipes
The city of Detroit is dealing with another water main break.
The latest break sent water gushing down Fullerton Avenue near Whitcomb Street on Friday, Jan. 30.
“It’s coming out really heavy,” said Tom Baydoun.
Baydoun operates a shop on Fullerton and noticed the break earlier Friday morning.
The gushing water covered part of the road for part of the day on Friday.
Some people drove through it, while others didn’t.
“The water is too deep,” A woman who didn’t share her name with Local 4 said. “It looks too deep. I can’t take a chance to go through that water and get stuck in there. One, I’ll be late for work, and two, my car might stall out.”
Metro Detroit HVAC companies overwhelmed as bitter cold triggers surge in emergency calls
As the bitter cold spell continues, HVAC companies across Metro Detroit are working overtime to keep up with emergency calls from residents and businesses.
“We are taking calls morning, noon, and night,” said Jeff Locklear, owner of AFM Heating & Cooling in Livonia.
His team handles 15-20 service calls daily.
The prolonged cold weather is putting unprecedented strain on heating systems.
Locklear’s crews are encountering multiple issues, including malfunctioning flame sensors, dirty filters, snow-clogged exhaust vents, and failing motors.
