Michigan population grows for 4th year in a row

Michigan saw 0.28% population increase in 2025

Michigan’s population is growing for the fourth year in a row.

In 2025, Michigan added about 28,000 people -- a 0.28% increase from the year before. With over 10 million residents, Michigan is the 10th most populous state in the country.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer noted it’s the first time since the early 1990s that more people moved into Michigan from other states than moved out.

Since the 2020 census, the population has grown by about 48,500, or .48%. Despite that growth, the state still lags behind the national average.

The Michigan Center for Data and Analytics projects a decline of about 206,000 people, or 2%, between 2025 and 2050.

Hillary Doe, Michigan’s first-ever Chief Growth Officer and now leads the Michigan Institute for Opportunity and Growth, joined Local 4 Live to talk more about the recent results. You can watch the full interview at the beginning of this article.
