The threat for severe weather has continued to diminish across Southeast Michigan today. While an isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out later this morning into the early afternoon, the chances remain quite low. At most, a few light rain showers may develop late this morning, primarily along and south of I-94. The Storm Prediction Center has trimmed the Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather to areas from Port Huron to Ann Arbor and southward, reflecting the lower confidence in storm development.
For most of Metro Detroit, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies through mid-morning, followed by increasing sunshine this afternoon. High temperatures will reach the low to mid-80s, while west winds become gusty, with gusts up to 25 mph at times.
A cold front will sweep through bringing a noticeable change in the weather. Winds will shift behind the front, and patchy wildfire smoke may return to parts of the region after 5 p.m. Overnight temperatures will drop into the 50s, setting the stage for a much cooler start to Wednesday.
Wednesday will feel much more like early fall than late summer, with mostly sunny skies, breezy conditions, and highs only in the mid-70s. The cooler, less humid air will make for a refreshing break before warmer weather returns later this week. By the weekend, temperatures will rebound into the mid to upper 80s with dry conditions expected for much of Southeast Michigan.
Tropics: Bertha Approaches the Gulf Coast
In the tropics, Tropical Storm Bertha is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Gulf Coast from Alabama westward to southeastern Louisiana tonight into Wednesday, where a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect. A Tropical Storm Watch also extends across portions of the Florida Panhandle, the New Orleans area, and parts of the southern Louisiana Gulf Coast. Residents in these areas should prepare for strong winds, heavy rainfall, localized flooding, and hazardous marine conditions as Bertha moves inland over the next 24 to 36 hours.
