DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray said an emergency rescue was underway for an occupant who was trapped inside the parking garage that had partially collapsed.
Murray said emergency crews responded around 8:45 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 6) to a partial collapse of a parking garage, with one vehicle trapped beneath.
The vehicle, believed to be a Ford Fusion or Ford Escape, had one occupant trapped beneath the concrete debris.
Fire department crews, police, building officials, and the Western Wayne Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team are actively working on the rescue operation.
Officials confirmed they have been in communication with the trapped individual, who is currently stuck but has not reported any major injuries.
Murray said crews are carefully shoring up the collapsed structure to stabilize it before beginning rescue efforts.
Due to the weight of the concrete debris, the process is expected to take several hours to ensure the safety of both the victim and rescuers.
Given the cold weather, heaters have been installed to keep the trapped occupant warm during the operation.
Authorities ask the public to stay away from the scene to allow emergency personnel to work safely and efficiently.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, and building officials are assessing the structure for additional information.
