DEARBORN, Mich. – Dearborn Fire Chief Joseph Murray gave an update on the partial collapse of a parking garage.
The miraculous rescue involved a man who survived being trapped when the structure collapsed onto his car.
The incident occurred on Friday (Feb. 6) in the area of Michigan Avenue and West Outer Drive around 8:45 p.m.
Fire crews say the first floor of the garage collapsed, burying the vehicle under concrete and steel beams.
After about two hours, rescue teams managed to pull the victim out through his car window.
Amazingly, he walked away without serious injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
The victim himself called 911 to report the incident.
Firefighters and the Dearborn Fire Department Special Operations Team responded immediately.
They began shoring up the structure to prevent further collapse and ensure safety.
The Western Wayne Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team, skilled in structural collapse rescue, was also called to assist.
Thanks to the quick, coordinated efforts, rescuers reached the vehicle faster than expected.
The victim was extricated through the car window and appeared uninjured.
He was transported to the hospital for evaluation as a precaution.
Murray praised the collaboration between the fire department, police, USAR team, and building officials.
Structural engineers and building officials will continue assessing the garage to determine the cause and ensure safety.
The collapse occurred in a section of the garage that extends underground, causing the first floor to cave in.
Other vehicles remain parked in unaffected areas of the structure.
The victim was able to walk to the stretcher after rescue, showing no signs of significant injury.
His family was on scene and expressed gratitude for the safe outcome.
