DETROIT – A suspect was arrested in what police call a vicious, deadly attack at a gas station on Detroit’s west side.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning at a gas station on Joy Road just west of Greenfield Road.
The man who was attacked, run over with his own car, and then died was described as someone who was giving.
If you needed help, he helped you.
Local 4 was inside this store in the afternoon when workers inside let a customer know who died, and that customer was visibly distraught.
Those on the inside also said the man who died came there daily.
The gas station near Prevost Street and Joy Road was swarming with police this morning as they investigated a deadly carjacking.
Something that left a man who goes by Preech feeling a lot of emotions.
Preech, knew victim: “It was sadness, you know what I’m saying, like, surprised, but damn near angry.”
The reason he felt like this was that he knew the man who died here.
According to Detroit police, they received a call at 4 a.m. for an assault at this gas station.
A man, whom they’ve only identified as a victim, came there to buy gas and went inside.
When he came out, a 25-year-old was sitting in his car.
That’s when the man in his 20s assaulted the victim.
Police said the man who was assaulted was severely injured.
However, the man in his 20s wasn’t done. He got back inside the victim’s car and drove over him several times, killing the man.
Not too long after this, the 25-year-old was taken into custody. But if we go back to the man who died, the workers in the gas station say he came there daily, which is how Preech met him.
Preech described the man as older and always willing to help anyone.
When asked if the victim ever helped him out during a time when he was down on his luck, Preech said, “Yeah, that’s actually how we met. He had a long but short but meaningful conversation with me. I still replay it a lot.”
A conversation, he says, in which they discussed the state of the area.
Police said the attack appeared random.
We reached out to them again to see if they had more information at this time, but they do not.
