The shooting happened in September 2025 on Kelly Road, near where 7 Mile Road turns into Moross Road.

Police bodycam footage shows Jarelle Burt, who was in town to attend a funeral and had no prior ties to Detroit, leaving a bar at about 10:30 p.m. with a drink still in his hand. When an officer approaches, Burt drops his drink and runs.

The officer eventually corners Burt, who is off camera, and tells him to put his hands up.

Police said Burt attempted to toss a gun onto the roof of a building, and the officer shot him six times during the encounter.

The weapon was eventually recovered, and Burt was taken to the hospital.

Burt was formally charged on Sept. 28 with felony firearm, concealed weapon, and resisting arrest charges. In January 2026, Burt pled guilty to two charges: attempted carrying of a concealed weapon and assaulting, resisting, or obstructing a police officer.

The third charge, a weapons felony firearm count, was dismissed by the court.

On Monday, Feb. 9, Burt was sentenced to two years of probation.
