According to a criminal complaint unsealed on Jan. 29, 2026, federal authorities reviewed security footage captured at the crime scene to identify Mays after a woman was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds.
Woman shot 5 times
The shooting happened just after 3 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2024, near the intersection of Monte Vista and Intervale in Detroit.
A woman was found by officers lying down in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.
Officials said she had been shot five times, including once in the right hip, once in the back and three times in the lower abdomen.
While the woman was hospitalized at Sinai Grace Hospital, she told Detroit police officers that two men were in a white Chrysler 300 and asked her how much she charged for sexual services.
The federal complaint stated that one of the men was identified as Mays. The other man in the car was not identified in the court documents and is referred to as “Conspirator #1.”
The woman then went into the car and was taken to a liquor store at Eaton and Wyoming to get an alcoholic drink and then continued to Cloverdale Street near Intervale Street.
Mays asks for $10 back, given $5 instead
The woman told police that she went to the backseat of the car and performed oral sex with one of the men and then “serviced” Mays.
Before the service was completed, the woman stopped and asked to be dropped off at a house near Monte Vista and Intervale. The men took her to the house. When they arrived, Mays asked for $10 back from the $30 he paid the woman for the service. The woman gave Mays $5 and said she could not find the other $5.
After she left the car, she was shot multiple times as she walked away.
Six weeks later, the woman selected Mays out of a photo array as the person who shot her.
What security video captured
The shooting was caught on a dumping camera, according to court documents.
A dumping camera enables surveillance necessary to target illegal dumping.
In the video, a white Chrysler 300 drove up to the area and stopped in the street. A woman wearing a blue jacket exits the car. Moments later, a man exits the car wearing black pants with a stripe down the side and a black shirt with a white circular design on the lower back.
As the woman walked away from the car, the man followed her and shot her in the back. She collapses to the ground.
The man got back in the car and drove away. Security footage also captured the car’s temporary license plate at the top of the rear window.
Police encounter men just before shooting
Just before 2 a.m. on Sept. 6, 2024, Detroit police officers conducted a traffic stop.
During the traffic stop, officers identified “Conspirator #1″ as the driver of the white Chrysler 300.
It’s unclear why officers were conducting a traffic stop on the two men. However, bodycam video shows who authorities believe was Mays wearing the same shirt as the person seen on video shooting the woman.
Police also reviewed security footage at the store he and the other man were at prior to the shooting and saw Mays wearing the same shirt as seen on the bodycam footage, as well as the same pants, confirming Mays’ identity.
Federal charge
He faces a federal charge of felon in possession of ammunition.
Mays was charged with multiple felonies in the 36th District Court in connection with the shooting, but court documents show that the charges were dismissed without prejudice in August 2025 due to the victim not appearing in court.
Previous conviction
Mays pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon in Wayne County in 2022 and was sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison as part of a plea deal.
