2 young men were working on a well outside a Michigan home. Now they’re dead from chemical exposure

First responders had to be decontaminated after responding to home

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. – Police said two young men were working on a well outside of a Michigan home, and then they died from exposure to chemicals.

Deputies from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office went to a home on Cribbins Road near Bryce Road in Clyde Township just before noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, to investigate two unconscious men.

Deputies said they immediately smelled chemicals.

A 20-year-old man from Riley Township and a 21-year-old man from Clyde Township were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead.

They died because of exposure to hydrogen sulfide, officials said.

Police said the men were working on a well at the recently purchased home.

Multiple first responders were decontaminated at the hospital due to chemical exposure.
