SHIAWASSEE COUNTY, Mich. – Authorities are once again reminding drivers of Michigan’s Move Over Law after multiple emergency vehicles were hit on a Michigan freeway.

It happened Saturday night, Feb. 21, just before midnight on I-69, about halfway between Lansing and Grand Blanc Township.

According to authorities, a Michigan State Police trooper was responding to a crash when their vehicle was struck by a semi truck that had lost control due to ice on the road. Police said the cruiser had its emergency lights activated at the time.

No injuries were reported, but both vehicles were significantly damaged.

A Perry Fire Department truck was blocking the freeway as the crash was being investigated. It too was hit by a semi truck. A firefighter suffered minor injuries and is expected to survive.

A third semi truck ended up driving off the road shortly after.

The freeway reopened at about 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 22.

Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect back in 2019. It required drivers to slow to 10 mph below the posted speed limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
