Driver narrowly escapes injury after sinkhole swallows truck on Detroit’s west side

The street is likely to remain closed while crews repair the roadway

DETROIT – A driver narrowly escaped serious injury after his truck’s front end fell into a sinkhole on Detroit’s west side.

The incident occurred on Thursday (Feb. 25) on Chatham Street near West Outer Drive and Rouge Park, where Local 4 found the truck with its front end lodged in the hole.

The street is likely to remain closed while crews repair the roadway.

Ryan told us he had just pulled out of his driveway when the truck became stuck and said he saw no construction or barricades warning drivers.

“I pulled out of my house and ran right into a sinkhole. Literally, it’s next door. I pulled our way out of our house and ran into a sinkhole,” said Ryan.

Ryan said he saw a construction site, but there weren’t any lights.

“I mean, it said construction, but there were no signs that said I couldn’t ride over it. It wasn’t those signs that said anything as far as that it was, you know, be cautious or anything like that.

It wasn’t no barricades up or anything.

It was just an open road. So I went to turn a corner, and I fell right into a sinkhole. Ditch, sinkhole, whatever you want to call it.

My truck is pretty big, and it’s all the way. Probably about a foot or two.

I wish they had put up signs so people would know what was going on and let the community know what’s going on in the neighborhood as far as don’t drive over here or I wish that they would’ve just constructed it a little bit better.

I know people who work on the streets all the time, but at the same time, it’s the right way to do stuff and the wrong way to do it.”
