Wayne State professor provides insight after U.S., Israel trade strikes with Iran

Tensions rise between U.S., Middle East

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth gave an update Monday morning on the situation with Iran and Israel.

The Pentagon confirmed three U.S. Air Force fighter jets crashed in Kuwait. They were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses during active combat under Iranian attacks. All six American crews were ejected and recovered safely.

This comes amid growing violence in the Middle East, with Israel and Iranian-backed Hezbollah fighters in Lebanon exchanging fire. It follows this weekend’s U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader was killed in the Saturday strikes. Three American service members were killed in action, and five others were seriously hurt.

President Donald Trump said he decided to act because Iran was unwilling to say it would not have a nuclear weapon following weeks of negotiations.

Lawmakers are expected to vote this week on a war powers resolution. It would require Trump to get approval from Congress before taking further military action.

Hegseth and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said they expect to take additional losses in this fight.
