Why Michigan basketball could make history with win at Iowa on Thursday

Michigan road win would make them undefeated on road for first time since 1917

IOWA CITY, IOWA – No. 3 Michigan Wolverines (27-2, 17-1 Big Ten) begins the final week of the conference schedule Thursday with a road meeting at Iowa (20-9, 10-8 Big Ten) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, and the game will be streamed on Peacock.

With a victory, the men in maize can go undefeated in true road games for an entire season for the first time since joining the Big Ten in 1917 by improving to 11-0 on the season.

This is Michigan’s seventh road game in its last 10 outings as part of an 11-game stretch over 38 days that included seven road contests, five games against top-10 opponents, and a neutral-site game against Duke in Washington, D.C.

Michigan holds a 100-68 all-time record against Iowa, but has won only two of the last five meetings.

In Iowa City, the men in maize are 38-42.

Michigan already clinched the Big Ten regular-season title after an 84-70 win at No. 10 Illinois and will return to Ann Arbor on Sunday, March 8, for a “Maize Out” rivalry game against the No. Michigan State to close the regular season.

The Wolverines have won 13 straight Big Ten games, marking the third time in program history they have posted a double-digit conference win streak.

With the regular-season title secured and the Big Ten’s expanded tournament format, Michigan earned the conference’s No. 1 seed and a triple bye, advancing directly to the quarterfinals on Friday, March 13.

At 27-2, Michigan has posted one of the program’s most dominant seasons, with the release crediting the team with 23 wins by 10 or more points, 13 by 20 or more, 10 by 30 or more, 7 by 40 or more (a Big Ten record), and one by 50 or more.

In his first two seasons at Michigan, head coach Dusty May has guided the Wolverines to a 54-12 record, including back-to-back 27-win campaigns, the statement said.

Earlier this season, May reportedly became the fastest coach in program history to reach 50 victories, doing so in 61 games.
