Authorities conducted 20 traffic stops, issuing 12 citations and four warnings in connection with distracted driving and other traffic violations.

“Distracted driving is one of the most preventable causes of traffic crashes,” said Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough. “When drivers choose to take their attention away from the road, whether by using a phone, eating, or engaging in other distractions, they put themselves and everyone around them at risk.”

AAA research shows that distracted driving contributes to about nine deaths every day in the U.S., according to the release.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office plans to continue to collaborate with local law enforcement agencies to address distracted driving, holding enforcement details periodically.

“Our goal is simple, keep our roadways safe,” Goodnough said. “Through enforcement and education, we hope to remind drivers that no text message, phone call, or distraction is worth risking a life.”

Under Michigan law, it is illegal for people to use a cell phone while driving.
