KENT COUNTY, Mich. – A Michigan man won $20 from the lottery. He then used half of that to buy another ticket and ended up winning a $1 million prize, officials said.

The 31-year-old Kent County man, who decided to stay anonymous, won his big prize playing the Michigan Lottery’s Electric 100s instant game.

“I stopped at the Wesco station late one night to cash in a winning Lottery ticket,” the player told Michigan Lottery officials. “I won $20, so I put $10 in my pocket and bought one Electric 100s ticket.

“I scratched the ticket in the store, and when I saw that I had won $1 million, I started screaming! It’s a good thing no one else was in the store, because they would have thought I was going insane!”

He purchased his ticket at the Wesco gas station at 211 North Main Street in Cedar Springs, which is about 20 miles north of Grand Rapids.

Michigan Lottery officials said the player decided to receive the prize as a one-time lump sum payment of about $693,000.

He plans to buy a car with his winnings, and then save the rest.

“Winning $1 million is life-changing and means I can do what I want to do,” the player told lottery officials.

The Electric 100s game launched in June 2025, and since then, players have won more than $30 million.

A ticket for this game is $10 and gives people the chance to win prizes from $10 up to $1 million. There is still $17 million in prizes left, including a $1 million prize and 53 $1,000 prizes.
