Severe weather could impact Metro Detroit on Thursday, with the potential for tornadoes.

Forecasts changed significantly overnight from Tuesday into Wednesday, increasing concerns about tornadoes, large hail, and flooding.

Showers may begin developing around 4–5 p.m. Thursday, with a few storms possible early on. Conditions are expected to intensify by around 7 p.m., when stronger storms are likely to move through the area.

During this period, Southeast Michigan faces a risk of potentially damaging tornadoes. The current outlook, ranging from marginal to slight risk, indicates that some tornadoes could reach EF-2 strength or higher, with wind speeds exceeding 111 mph.

If that happens, these would be more powerful than the quick spin-up tornadoes typically seen in the region.

An EF-2 tornado can cause significant damage, including destroying parts of homes, tearing apart mobile homes, and snapping large trees.

Residents are urged to have a safety plan ready for home, work, and school. In addition to tornadoes, the storms may also bring flooding and large hail across the region.
