Crews put out massive fire at building on Wayne State University campus

No injuries reported, officials say

DETROIT – Crews put out a fire at a building on Wayne State University’s campus on Wednesday afternoon.

On April 1, Local 4’s Tower Camera captured video of the smoke billowing out of the Maccabees Building at 5057 Woodward Avenue. The building has been evacuated.

At 1:24 p.m., the following message was sent out to students:

WSU Alert sent out on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, about a fire at the Maccabees Building. (WDIV)

City of Detroit officials said there are no reported injuries.

University officials said the fire was confined to the building’s 11th floor, which housed graduate school offices and the Department of African American Studies.

The Maccabees Building was designed by renowned architect Albert Kahn and completed in 1927. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
