Buddy’s Pizza under new ownership -- meet the CEO

Juan Rojas, the new CEO of Buddy’s, joined Local 4 Live

When someone visits Detroit and asks for food recommendations, Buddy’s is usually on that list. Now, there are changes on the way for the pizza chain and the original creator of Detroit-style pizza.

Buddy’s started as Buddy’s Rendezvous 80 years ago, and Gus Guerra made his first square-shaped pizza out of the restaurant on 6 Mile and Conant on Detroit’s east side. He used blue-steel pans, commonly used for auto parts, to create the taste we all know and love now.

Gus sold the restaurant in 1953, and over the years, Buddy’s has had several owners. The latest was an investment group headquartered in Nashville. But last week, a group of local investors announced they were taking over the iconic brand and bringing ownership of Detroit-style pizza back to Detroit.

Juan Rojas, the new CEO of Buddy’s, joined Local 4 Live to talk about the change. You can watch the full interview in the video at the beginning of this article.
