Detroit animal shelter at capacity, urgently needs dog food, fosters after severe storms

At one point, staff worried they would not have enough dry food to make it to Monday

DETROIT – Detroit Dog Rescue is facing an emergency: its kennels are at capacity, and its supply of dog food is critically low, following recent storms that staff say have driven more stray dogs out of hiding and into the streets.

“It’s definitely like one of the worst that we’ve seen,” said shelter manager and trainer Kristen Kuechenmeister.

Kuechenmeister said the animals have been showing up across the city, and people are bringing them to their door.

“We think with all the rain and flooding, fields where dogs might hide out are flooding,” Kuechenmeister said. “The dogs are coming out, they’re looking for food, looking for shelter. People are finding them and bringing them to our door.”

The shelter has been forced to stop intake of large dogs because every kennel is full.

At one point, staff worried they would not have enough dry food to make it to Monday.

They’ve since received some donations, but Kuechenmeister said the need remains urgent as more people are expected to arrive with dogs in the coming days.

“We really need help, like all rescues right now,” Kuechenmeister said.

Detroit Dog Rescue is asking the community to step in by fostering dogs for at least two weeks and donating food. The shelter said it is specifically in need of Blue Buffalo Adult Chicken and Rice dry dog food.
