PORT HURON, Mich. – A St. Clair County father was remanded back to jail after admitting he shot three of his children, killing his teenage son.
The shooting happened in September at a Port Huron apartment complex, near the intersection of Kraft Road and 24th Avenue.

A 17-year-old boy, a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds, where the 17-year-old died from his injuries.

Jeffery Smerer, the children’s father, was taken into custody on an unrelated warrant, but was later charged with 10 felonies in connection with the shooting.
On Tuesday, May 26, Smerer pleaded guilty to open murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse and five counts of felony firearm.
Smerer remains in custody ahead of his June 29 sentencing.
