Court rules Roseville murder suspect DeAndre Booker fit for trial in death of Ashley Elkins

Prosecutors allege Booker killed Elkins while she was inside his apartment and later disposed of her body

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – DeAndre Booker, 33, of Roseville, who was accused in the killing of his former girlfriend, Ashley Elkins, has been found competent to stand trial, clearing the way for proceedings to move forward in a case that includes charges of first-degree murder.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido announced on Thursday (June 4) that Booker was deemed competent following a forensic evaluation.

The determination stems from a report issued by the Center for Forensic Psychiatry dated May 20, which was adopted by a Macomb County Circuit judge during a pretrial conference on Tuesday.

Booker is charged in connection with the death of Ashley Lashay Elkins, who disappeared on Jan. 2, 2025.

Prosecutors allege Booker killed Elkins while she was inside his Roseville apartment and later disposed of her body.

Court records show attorneys stipulated to the competency findings during the June 3 hearing.

A further pretrial conference is scheduled for Oct. 26, 2026, at 1:30 p.m., with trial set to begin Nov. 10, 2026, at 9 a.m.

Booker faces multiple charges, including first-degree premeditated murder, a crime punishable by life in prison without parole.

He is also charged with tampering with evidence, disinterment or mutilation of a dead body, concealing the death of an individual, and lying to a police officer in a violent crime investigation in a related case.

The investigation into Elkins’ disappearance began in January 2025.

Police have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding her death.
