WARREN, Mich. – A 31-year-old man arrested earlier this month for reportedly brandishing a weapon and threatening three Warren hospital workers is due back in court next week.
Walter Smith was arraigned on nine charges stemming from the June 3 incident, which occurred overnight outside Henry Ford Hospital near 12 Mile and Hoover roads.
Sources told Local 4 that a man approached the three ER workers around 1:30 a.m. while they were taking a routine break. He then began threatening the employees and ordering them not to move while pointing a gun in their direction, police said.
The workers were reportedly able to run away from the man to call 911, however the suspect fled the scene before police arrived.
Henry Ford Health confirmed that the hospital was placed on a brief lockdown, and Smith was located and arrested by Warren police later that afternoon.
Smith was arraigned on June 5 in Warren’s 37th District Court on two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, weapon possession by a prohibited person, brandishing a weapon in public, driving without a valid license, and three felony firearm charges.
He is also on federal probation for robbery and use of a firearm during a violent crime in an unrelated incident.
Smith’s bond was set for $500,000 and he is due back in court at 8:45 a.m. June 25 for a probable cause conference.
