Man fatally shoots Detroit neighbor while trying to save her from attacking dog

Police say neighbor tried to save woman after stray dog attacked her

DETROIT – A tragic incident Monday night resulted in a woman's death after she was accidentally shot by a neighbor who was trying to save her from an aggressive stray dog.

Located at Goodwin and Westminster streets is a community that is in shock after losing one of their own. The tightly-knit populace has been living in fear lately due to the recent arrival of a pack of stray dogs that have been canvasing the neighborhood. On occasion, some have even been afraid to leave their homes.

Monday night, Patricia Cosby was pulled into the street by a stray dog. Calling out for a neighbor by name, Mike Williams quickly rushed to her rescue and in the chaos of trying to separate Patch from the dog, she was shot fatally.

Neighbors describe Williams as a compassionate man who would help anyone for any reason, regardless of what he was doing. He is a concealed pistol license holder and the unfortunate turn-of-events has left him devastated.

"I run down, trying to shield her and shoo her from the dog, and the next thing you know..." said Williams, distraught, "It just hurts so bad. It's hard."

You can watch Paula Tutman's interview with Williams in the video posted above.

The weapon has been been confiscated as evidence in the on-going investigation. Police are still preparing the report to send to the prosecutor's office, but they are vocal in how cooperative Williams has been in the investigation.
